Schedule 40 vs schedule 80 PVC: what changes?
Schedule sets wall thickness, not diameter. Schedule 40 and schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter for a given size, but schedule 80 walls run about 30 to 45 percent thicker. Schedule 40 and schedule 80 fittings thread and glue together because the outside diameters match, but a system is only as strong as its weakest part. Do not drop schedule 40 fittings into a high-pressure schedule 80 line.

PVC vs CPVC vs ABS: which pipe for which job?
PVC and CPVC look similar but differ in heat tolerance. PVC tops out near 140°F; CPVC is chlorinated to handle hot water up to about 200°F, so it is the common choice for hot and cold supply. How do you glue PVC pipe?
PVC joints are solvent-welded, not glued in the everyday sense. Primer and cement chemically melt the two surfaces so they fuse into one piece. Skipping primer is the top cause of joint failure. Cut square, deburr, primer, cement, and seat with a quarter turn. Hold 30 seconds, wait about 24 hours before full pressure.
- Cut the pipe square with a ratchet cutter or fine-tooth saw, then deburr the inside and outside edges so the joint seats fully.
- Dry-fit the pipe and fitting to confirm alignment, and mark the depth and rotation with a pencil.
- Brush PVC primer on the outside of the pipe end and inside the fitting socket, then let it flash off for about 10 seconds.
- Apply an even coat of PVC cement to both primed surfaces while the primer is still wet.
- Push the pipe fully into the fitting with a quarter turn to spread the cement, and line it up to your mark.
- Hold the joint together for about 30 seconds so it does not push back out, then wipe the excess bead.
- Let the joint set for 15 to 30 minutes before handling, and wait about 24 hours before full pressure. Cure time varies with size, temperature, and humidity.
Match the cement to the material and diameter: PVC cement for PVC, CPVC cement for CPVC, and heavy-body cement for pipe 6 inches and up. Work in ventilated space, because the solvents are strong.
What do PVC colors and markings mean?
Color is a quick field tell. White PVC is schedule 40 for pressure and DWV. Gray is schedule 80 for higher pressure. Cream, tan, or light gray usually means CPVC. Green often marks sewer pipe, and black is ABS. Always confirm with the printed markings, which list size, schedule, and NSF rating.
