How to Fix a Running Toilet, By Cause

To fix a running toilet, find which of five parts is failing, then repair or replace just that part. Add food coloring to the tank: if it seeps into the bowl, the flapper is leaking. Start here: two tests that isolate the cause

The fix for each cause

Turn off the supply valve and flush to empty the tank before any part swap, then sponge out the last inch of water. The five fixes below run from easiest to hardest. Work down only as far as your tests point, since fixing the flapper when the fill valve is the culprit changes nothing.

Flapper not sealing

Too long or tangled, and slack gets pinned under the flapper so it cannot seal, giving a constant trickle. Too short, and the flapper is held slightly open. Adjust the chain so there is about a half inch of slack when the flapper is closed, moving the hook to a different link.

Run these steps top to bottom and stop when the running stops. This order moves from the cheapest, most common fix to the rare, involved one, so you spend the least time and money to solve it.

  1. Take off the tank lid and watch a flush cycle. Note whether water leaks down into the bowl or spills up into the overflow tube. That single observation points to the flapper (bottom) or the fill valve and float (top).
  2. Run the food-coloring test. Dye in the bowl within 15 minutes confirms a flapper leak. If the bowl stays clear, rule out the flapper and look upward.
  3. Check the chain and flapper seat. Untangle the chain, set a half inch of slack, and press the flapper down by hand to see if it seals. Clean any grit off the seat with a cloth.
  4. Lower the float. If water is reaching the overflow tube, drop the float an inch so the tank stops filling about 1 inch below the tube top. Recheck.
  5. Replace the flapper. If it is worn, warped, or the dye test failed, swap it. This clears most running toilets on its own.
  6. Replace the fill valve. If the valve still hisses or will not shut off after adjusting the float, install a new universal fill valve.
  7. Replace the flush valve. Only if a new flapper still leaks at the seat. This means pulling the tank, so consider a plumber here.
