Sewer Line Clean Out: What It Is, Where to Find It, and How to Use It

How to open a sewer cleanout, step by step

Opening a cleanout is simple, but the one real hazard is trapped pressure. If the line is clogged, sewage and gas can be backed up behind the cap and will push out when the seal breaks. Loosen the cap slowly, stand to the side rather than over it, and never put your face above the opening. Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep a bucket handy.
