Ball valve vs gate valve: which should you use?
For a shutoff you touch every few years, choose a ball valve. It turns a quarter (90 degrees) from open to closed, seals tight, and rarely seizes. Gate valves cost a few dollars less and give a slightly straighter flow path, but their stem and gate corrode and stick, so an old one may snap or refuse to reseat. A ball valve works by rotating a bored ball inside the body. When the hole lines up with the pipe, water runs straight through; a quarter turn puts the solid side across the flow and stops it.
