How a Septic System Works

A septic system works by holding household wastewater in a buried tank long enough for solids to settle, then draining the clarified liquid into a soil drainfield that finishes the treatment. What is a septic system?

A septic system is an on-site wastewater treatment setup for homes without a municipal sewer connection. It has two core parts: a watertight septic tank that separates and partly digests waste, and a drainfield that disperses the liquid into the soil. About one in five US homes relies on one, according to EPA estimates.

Everything drains to the tank by gravity, so no electricity is needed in a conventional system. The tank does the heavy lifting of separation, and the soil does the actual cleaning. How does wastewater flow from house to tank to drainfield?

Wastewater moves in one direction by gravity, from your fixtures to the tank, then out to the soil. The cycle repeats every time you run water. Below is the step-by-step path a gallon of wastewater takes from the moment you flush to the point it rejoins the groundwater.

  1. Every drain in the house (toilets, sinks, showers, laundry) empties into one main sewer pipe that slopes down to the tank.
  2. Wastewater enters through the inlet baffle, which points the flow downward and calms it so the layers are not stirred up.
  3. Over roughly 24 to 48 hours the waste separates: grease and oils rise into the scum layer, heavy solids sink into the sludge layer, and clarified liquid (effluent) sits in the middle.
  4. Anaerobic bacteria digest part of the solids, shrinking the sludge but never removing it completely.
  5. As new wastewater pushes in, an equal volume of effluent leaves through the outlet baffle, which draws from the clear middle layer.
  6. The effluent flows to the distribution box, which divides it evenly among the drainfield trenches.
  7. Perforated pipes release the effluent into gravel-filled trenches, where it seeps into unsaturated soil.
  8. Soil microbes and filtration strip out bacteria, viruses, and nutrients as the water percolates down, until it safely reaches the groundwater.

What happens inside the septic tank?

Inside the tank, gravity and bacteria sort wastewater into three layers. A typical 750 to 1,500 gallon tank holds each day’s flow for 24 to 48 hours, long enough for that separation to happen. Scum floats on top, sludge settles on the bottom, and the clear effluent in the middle is the only layer meant to leave.

The scum layer is fats, oils, grease, and soap residue. The sludge layer is the heaviest solids, including waste and toilet paper that anaerobic bacteria slowly break down. Between them, the effluent is clarified liquid that still carries dissolved waste and needs the soil to finish the job.

Baffles or sanitary tees at the inlet and outlet are what keep the system honest. They stop scum and sludge from washing out to the drainfield, which is the failure that ruins the most expensive component. How does the drainfield treat the wastewater?

Because the soil is doing the cleaning, the drainfield needs air and dry ground to work. Driving over it compacts the soil, and building or paving over it blocks evaporation and oxygen. Too much water at once, from leaks or heavy laundry days, can flood the trenches and push partly treated effluent to the surface.

Aerobic vs conventional septic systems: what is the difference?

Conventional systems rely on oxygen-free (anaerobic) bacteria and gravity. Aerobic treatment units add an air pump that injects oxygen, so faster aerobic bacteria break waste down 20 to 30 times quicker and produce cleaner effluent. Aerobic units cost more and need electricity plus regular service, but they suit poor soils and small lots.

An aerobic system usually runs three compartments: a trash tank, an aeration or treatment chamber, and a pump tank. Because the discharged water is much clearer, some areas allow spray or drip irrigation instead of a buried trench field. In many states an aerobic unit requires a service contract and periodic inspections that a conventional gravity system does not.
