How to Plumb With PEX: Fittings, Tools, and Layout

PEX plumbing runs flexible cross-linked polyethylene tubing from a water source to each fixture, joined with barbed fittings and one of four connection methods: crimp, cinch, push-fit, or expansion. Success comes down to three choices: which PEX grade (A, B, or C), which fitting method your tool supports, and whether you run a home-run manifold or trunk-and-branch layout.

What do you need to plumb with PEX?

You need PEX tubing in the right grade, matching barbed fittings, a tubing cutter, and the connection tool for your chosen method. Half-inch tubing feeds most fixtures, while three-quarter-inch handles trunk lines and high-demand runs. Pick the grade first, because it dictates which fittings and tools you can use.

The three grades differ by how the polyethylene is cross-linked, which changes flexibility, freeze tolerance, and which fittings they accept. PEX-A (invented by Uponor) has the strongest shape memory, so it can be expanded and can even be un-kinked with a heat gun. PEX-B is the stiffest and cheapest, and it fills the shelves at most big-box stores. PEX-C sits in the middle. Beyond tubing and fittings, keep a square-cutting PEX tubing cutter, a deburring pass for clean ends, a marker for insertion depth, and the tool for your method. A quality crimp or cinch kit belongs in your essential plumbing tools. Also stock stub-out elbows, drop-ear elbows for fixtures, and a manifold if you plan a home-run layout.

How do you connect PEX fittings?

PEX plumbing joins with four connection methods: crimp, cinch (clamp), expansion, and push-fit. How do you make a crimp connection?

A crimp connection takes seven steps and about a minute once you have the rhythm. You cut square, slide the copper ring on, seat the barbed fitting to its shoulder, position the ring 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the end, crimp in one squeeze, then verify with the go/no-go gauge. Skipping the gauge check is the top cause of leaks.

  1. Cut the tubing square with a PEX cutter; a clean 90-degree cut lets the fitting seat fully.
  2. Slide the copper crimp ring onto the tubing about 2 inches past the end.
  3. Push the barbed fitting into the tubing until the tube meets the fitting shoulder.
  4. Slide the ring back so it sits 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the tube end, covering the barbs but not hanging off.
  5. Center the crimp tool jaws square over the ring and squeeze in one full stroke.
  6. Check the crimp with the go/no-go gauge: the “go” slot must pass over the ring and the “no-go” side must not.
  7. Pressure-test the system (often 100 psi of air or water for the code-required window) and inspect every joint before closing walls.

Cinch clamps follow the same seating steps, but you tighten a stainless ear clamp with the cinch tool instead of squeezing a copper ring. Expansion reverses the order: you slide the ProPEX ring on, expand the tube end with the tool in several rotations, push the fitting in, then let the tube shrink back and grip. In cold weather, expansion joints need a few minutes to relax before you pressurize the line.

Home-run manifold or trunk-and-branch: which PEX layout?

Two layouts dominate PEX plumbing. A home-run (manifold) system runs a dedicated 1/2-inch line from a central manifold to each fixture, giving steady pressure and few hidden joints. Trunk-and-branch uses a 3/4-inch main with 1/2-inch branches teeing off, using less pipe but more fittings. Manifolds cost more tubing; trunk-and-branch costs more connections.

Material totals swing hard between the two. One worked example put a 2,300-square-foot, two-story home at about 1,515 feet of tubing for a home-run design versus far less for a trunk layout, so the manifold buys performance with pipe. If you are pricing a whole-house project, fold both into your cost to repipe a house before you commit to a layout.

How do you route and support PEX runs?

Support horizontal PEX every 32 inches and vertical runs at each floor with a mid-story guide, per the IPC. Leave a little slack for expansion, since PEX moves more than copper with temperature. Protect the tube where it passes through studs with nail plates, and keep it clear of recessed lights, flues, and sharp metal edges.

Use plastic clips or talon-style hangers sized for the tube so you do not pinch it. Do not cinch supports tight; PEX needs room to slide as it heats and cools. Where a run turns, add a support near the change of direction and use a bend support or a sweep elbow rather than kinking the tube. Keep hot and cold lines a few inches apart, and sleeve PEX where it enters concrete.

Where can you not use PEX?

PEX cannot take continuous sunlight or the heat right at a water heater. Keep it out of direct UV (most brands allow only 30 to 60 days of exposure), and start supply lines at least 18 inches from a water heater in metal. Many codes also bar PEX outdoors above ground or on gas and tankless units.

For that first stretch off the tank, run copper pipe or a braided stainless connector, then transition to PEX with a threaded adapter. Avoid PEX for gas lines entirely, and never leave it exposed on a roof or exterior wall. Rodents can also chew PEX, so protect runs in crawlspaces and attics.
