Many homes built in hard-water regions come pre-plumbed with a loop, typically in the garage or a utility area. If you see two capped 3/4-inch pipes with a jumper between them and a drain nearby, that is your loop. Remove the jumper and the softener ties straight in.

No loop is not a dealbreaker. You cut into the main line after the shutoff, add a tee for the inlet and another for the return, and set the unit close to a drain and outlet. It is more work and often the point where a homeowner calls a pro.

How do you connect the bypass valve, inlet, and outlet?

Most softeners ship with a bypass valve that mounts to the back of the control head. How do you plumb the drain line and air gap?

Run a 1/2-inch drain line from the softener to a floor drain, laundry standpipe, or utility sink. Do not connect it directly to the waste pipe. A softener drain line may never tie directly into the waste system. Both the Uniform Plumbing Code and the International Plumbing Code treat a direct connection as a cross-connection, since a sewer backup could siphon waste into your softened water. The fix is the air gap: an open vertical space of at least 1-1/2 inches, or twice the drain line diameter, whichever is larger. Where you must drain overhead into house plumbing, use an air gap fitting paired with a P-trap so sewer gas stays out. How to install a water softener step by step

With the loop and drain located, a softener install runs shut off water, drain the lines, mount the bypass, connect inlet and outlet, run the drain line with its air gap, connect the brine tank overflow, then slowly repressurize and program a regeneration. Most jobs take 2 to 4 hours.

  1. Shut off the main water supply and switch the water heater off or to pilot.
  2. Open a low faucet to drain and depressurize the lines, and keep a bucket and towels ready.
  3. Set the softener near the loop, within 30 feet of the drain, on a level surface with a power outlet in reach.
  4. Mount the bypass valve to the control head, lube the o-rings, and set it to the bypass position.
  5. Tie into the main line after the shutoff and before the water heater, add shutoff valves, and connect the inlet (hard) and outlet (soft) lines to the bypass, matching the arrows.
  6. Run the 1/2-inch drain line to the floor drain or standpipe and secure the air gap of at least 1-1/2 inches.
  7. Connect the brine tank overflow line to its own drain point, also with an air gap.
  8. Add salt to the brine tank and pour in water to the level the manual specifies.
  9. Slowly move the bypass to service to repressurize the unit, then check every joint for leaks.
  10. Restore the water heater, plug in the softener, set the water hardness and time of day, and run a manual regeneration to flush the system.

Install a water softener yourself if you can sweat or crimp a connection, cut into the main line, and meet local drain code. Budget a day for a first attempt. Hire a licensed plumber when the softener needs a new drain, when a permit is required, or when DIY would void the warranty.
