An escutcheon plate is sized by the pipe’s outside diameter: 1/2 in copper (0.625 in OD) takes a 1/2 in CTS plate, and 1/2 in steel or brass pipe (about 0.84 in OD) takes a 1/2 in IPS plate.

Key Takeaways

  • Half-inch copper, PEX and CPVC share copper tube sizing, so one plate labeled 1/2 in CTS fits all three; BrassCraft’s 1/2 in nominal escutcheon has a 0.625 in hole.
  • Half-inch Schedule 40 steel pipe measures 0.84 in outside, per the Krausz pipe OD chart, which is why BrassCraft sells a separate 1/2 in IP plate with a 0.840 in hole.
  • Plate depth decides how much stub-out you can hide: Jones Stephens’ E80050 low pattern stands 3/8 in tall, while the BrassCraft 654 bell stands 1.12 in.
  • Wal-Rich’s 1/2 in IPS low escutcheon (1610004) is 2-1/2 in across, so the wall hole must stay within 1-1/4 in of the pipe center.
  • Split-hinge plates such as the Oatey HDC5340C and the X-Plate universal plate (0.5 in to 3 in OD pipe) go on without removing the valve.
  • Shower trim escutcheons are valve-specific: Moen lists its UT4321 M-CORE trim for U130 and U140 series valves only.

What is an escutcheon plate in plumbing?

An escutcheon plate is a round trim ring, 2-3/8 to 2-7/8 in across in the plates we checked, that slides over a pipe where it leaves a finished wall, floor or ceiling. It covers the rough-cut hole in drywall or tile, hides the gap around the pipe and gives the stub-out behind a toilet, sink or radiator a finished look. Plumbers also call it a flange or a wall plate.

The plate does no structural work. It does not hold the pipe, seal water or carry load, so the only decisions are hole size, depth, style and finish. Get the hole wrong and the plate either rattles or will not go on at all.

What size escutcheon plate do I need for my pipe?

Buy the escutcheon plate by the pipe’s outside diameter, not its nominal size. Copper tube, PEX and CPVC use copper tube size (CTS), where 1/2 in tube measures 0.625 in outside. Threaded steel and brass use iron pipe size (IPS), where 1/2 in pipe measures about 0.84 in outside. The label on the package will say CTS or IPS, and that word matters more than the fraction.

The two systems differ by 0.215 in at the 1/2 in size, enough that a mismatch shows from across the room. The fastest field check is a tape across the pipe: 5/8 in means CTS, a little under 7/8 in means IPS. PEXUniverse sells its plates in exactly these families: PEX, copper and CPVC on CTS sizing, brass on IPS and drains on tubular sizing.

Pipe you have Outside diameter Escutcheon label to buy Example plate

1/2 in IPS steel or brass nipple 0.84 in (Krausz) 1/2 in IPS or 1/2 in IP BrassCraft 1/2 in IP (0.840 in I.D.); Wal-Rich 1610004
3/4 in copper or PEX 0.875 in (Lewis Brass) 3/4 in CTS Confirm a 7/8 in hole on the label
3/4 in IPS pipe 1.05 in (Krausz) 3/4 in IPS Wal-Rich 1610006, 2-1/2 in plate
1 in IPS pipe 1.32 in (Krausz) 1 in IPS Wal-Rich 1610008, 2-7/8 in plate
1-1/4 in IPS pipe 1.66 in (Krausz) 1-1/4 in IPS Wal-Rich 1610010, 2-7/8 in plate

Pipe OD: 1/2 in IPS is 0.84 in, 1/2 in copper is 0.63 in1/2 in copper (CTS)0.63 in1/2 in steel (IPS)0.84 in3/4 in copper (CTS)0.88 in3/4 in steel (IPS)1.05 in1 in copper (CTS)1.13 in1 in steel (IPS)1.32 in

The chart, built from the Krausz pipe OD chart, shows why the sizes get mixed up. A 3/4 in copper tube (0.88 in) is almost the same width as a 1/2 in steel pipe (0.84 in), so a 3/4 in CTS plate slips over 1/2 in IPS but leaves a visible gap. For the full set of nominal versus actual dimensions, see our guide to plumbing pipe sizes.

Which escutcheon plate type fits which job?

Pick the escutcheon plate type by two facts: whether the pipe end is still open and how far the stub sticks out of the wall. One-piece plates must slide on before a valve or fitting goes on. Split-hinge and universal plates wrap around a pipe that already has a valve. Low, shallow and bell patterns differ only in depth, from 3/8 in to 1.12 in in the plates we checked.

Type Verified example Key spec Use it when
One-piece low pattern Jones Stephens E80050 (1/2 in copper) 2-1/2 in OD x 3/8 in height Stub comes straight out of a flat wall and the end is open
One-piece shallow BrassCraft 649 (stainless steel) 5/8 in ID x 2-1/2 in OD x 1/2 in Standard angle stop under a sink or toilet
Bell (deep) BrassCraft 654; Wal-Rich 1613006 1.12 in height (654); 2-3/8 in OD (1613006) Pipe sits slightly proud, or a fitting shoulder needs hiding
Split-hinge flange Oatey HDC5340C (1/2 in CTS) Chrome-plated steel, opens on a hinge The valve is already on and you are not draining the line
Set screw, cast brass BrassCraft 1/2 in IPS shallow Set screw locks to the pipe Plate keeps sliding off a vertical or exposed pipe
Plastic Oatey HDC5365 (1/2 in CTS, white) White plastic Painted white trim, laundry boxes, utility rooms
Universal X-Plate Fits 0.5 to 3 in OD pipe Odd sizes or several pipes of different diameters

Commercial specs use the same split. The New York State Office of General Services masterspec section 22 05 18 calls for split-plate, stamped steel escutcheons with a concealed or exposed-rivet hinge and a polished chrome-plated finish on insulated piping.

Finish is the last choice. Jones Stephens sells the same 1/2 in copper low pattern in polished brass (E80050), brushed nickel (E0105BN), oil-rubbed bronze (E0105RB) and old world bronze (E0105WB), so you can match faucet trim without changing the size.

How do you install an escutcheon plate on a supply stub-out?

Install a one-piece escutcheon plate before the stop valve. The valve body is far wider than a 0.625 in hole, so the plate must be on the bare stub first. On a typical sink or toilet supply the whole job is seven steps, and the only tools are a tape measure, a pipe cutter if the stub needs trimming and a screwdriver for a set screw.

  1. Shut off the water and open a low faucet to drain the line if a valve is coming off.
  2. Measure the pipe outside diameter. 5/8 in means a CTS plate; about 27/32 in (0.84 in) means an IPS plate.
  3. Measure how far the stub leaves the finished wall. Under 3/8 in suits a low pattern, around 1/2 in a shallow plate such as the BrassCraft 649, and up to about 1 in a bell such as the BrassCraft 654.
  4. Check that the wall hole fits under the plate. A 2-1/2 in plate covers a hole that stays within 1-1/4 in of the pipe center on every side.
  5. Slide the plate onto the stub with the finished face out, then install the stop valve. Our guide to replacing a shut-off valve covers compression and push-fit stops.
  6. Turn the water on and check the valve for drips before the plate goes tight to the wall, so you can still see the connection.
  7. Push the plate flat to the wall and snug the set screw if it has one. Run a thin bead of silicone around the top and sides in a wet area.

How do you cover a crooked or oversized hole with an escutcheon plate?

A crooked or off-center pipe needs either a deeper plate or a wider one. A bell escutcheon such as the BrassCraft 654 has 1.12 in of height to swallow a stub that leaves the wall at a slight angle. A hole wider than the plate needs a bigger plate: Wal-Rich steps up from 2-1/2 in on its 1/2 and 3/4 in IPS plates to 2-7/8 in on 1 and 1-1/4 in IPS.

The math is simple. Divide the plate diameter by two and measure from the pipe center to the farthest edge of the hole. If the hole edge is farther out than half the plate, patch the drywall first or move up a size.

When the valve is already soldered or pressed on, a one-piece plate is out. Use a split-hinge plate like the Oatey HDC5340C, or a universal plate such as the X-Plate, which fits pipe from 0.5 to 3 in outside diameter and installs without disconnecting the pipe. The split seam faces down so it is hidden from eye level.

Where the pipe changes material at the wall, such as a brass nipple threaded into a copper adapter, size the plate to whatever pipe actually passes through it. Our breakdown of plumbing fittings shows which adapters change the outside diameter.

Are shower valve escutcheon plates interchangeable between brands?

No. A shower trim escutcheon plate is shaped and drilled for one valve family, so a plate from another brand or series usually will not line up with the cartridge, stop tube or mounting screws. Moen lists its Greenfield UT4321 M-CORE trim for U130 and U140 series valves, and its trim kits ship without the valve, which you must already have in the wall.

Moen’s parts diagram for the UT8350 3-Series trim lists the escutcheon kit as a separate part and limits the trim to U130 or U140 series valves. That means a cracked or worn plate can often be replaced alone, without buying a whole trim kit.

Delta, Pfister and other makers follow the same logic but use their own valve series. Read the brand and series off the valve body or the old trim before ordering, and use our guide to shower valve types to identify pressure-balance versus thermostatic bodies.

What escutcheon plate goes on a drain trap arm or a fire sprinkler?

A drain escutcheon plate is sized on the tubular system, not CTS or IPS. The trap arm under a bathroom sink is usually sold as 1-1/2 in tubular, and PEXUniverse lists tubular as its own escutcheon family. A 1-1/2 in IPS plate is the wrong part for that arm, so match the tubular label on the package.

Fire sprinkler escutcheons are a separate product. McMaster-Carr lists them by sprinkler head style, pipe size and thread type, not by plumbing pipe size. Sprinkler work falls under NFPA 13 and the fire protection contractor who installed the system, so do not swap a sprinkler escutcheon for a plumbing plate or paint one.

How we sourced this

We ran two live searches for the primary keyword and a sizing question in October 2026, then checked manufacturer and distributor listings for hole sizes, plate diameters and heights: BrassCraft, Wal-Rich, Jones Stephens, Oatey, X-Plate and Moen. Pipe outside diameters come from the Krausz pipe OD chart and Lewis Brass tube listings; we round to two decimals where Krausz does. We excluded prices, which change weekly, and did not quote NFPA 13 text, which we did not review. We could not verify a Delta trim cross-reference, so we name no Delta part numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of an escutcheon plate?

An escutcheon plate is a trim ring that covers the rough hole where a pipe leaves a wall, floor or ceiling. It hides ragged drywall, keeps dust and pests from the cavity and gives the stub-out a finished look. On a shower, the larger trim escutcheon also covers the valve body and the access opening in the tile.

What size escutcheon do I need for 1/2 inch copper pipe?

Buy a plate labeled 1/2 in CTS or 1/2 in nominal (5/8 in O.D.). Half-inch copper measures 0.625 in across, and BrassCraft lists its 1/2 in nominal escutcheon with a 0.625 in hole. The same plate fits 1/2 in PEX and CPVC, because both use copper tube sizing.

What is the difference between an IPS and a CTS escutcheon?

The hole size. An IPS plate fits iron pipe size threaded pipe and nipples, where 1/2 in pipe measures about 0.84 in outside. A CTS plate fits copper tube size pipe, where 1/2 in tube measures 0.625 in. A 1/2 in IPS plate rattles on copper, and a 1/2 in CTS plate will not pass over a steel or brass nipple.

Can you install an escutcheon without removing the valve?

Yes, with a split-hinge plate or a universal plate. A split plate opens on a hinge, wraps around the pipe behind the valve and snaps shut. Oatey sells a 1/2 in CTS split flange in chrome-plated steel, and the X-Plate universal plate fits pipes from 0.5 in to 3 in outside diameter without disconnecting anything.

How do you keep an escutcheon plate from sliding off the wall?

Use a plate with a set screw or a deeper bell pattern. BrassCraft sells a 1/2 in IPS shallow cast brass escutcheon whose set screw locks onto the pipe. Plain stamped plates rely on a snug hole, so a loose one usually means the wrong size, such as an IPS plate on copper tube.

Should you caulk around escutcheon plates?

Caulk is optional on dry walls and worth adding in wet areas. A thin bead of clear or white silicone around the top and sides of a stub-out plate keeps splash out of the cavity. On a shower trim, read the trim maker’s installation sheet before adding any caulk.

Are shower valve escutcheons universal?

No. A shower trim escutcheon is drilled and shaped for one valve family. Moen’s Greenfield UT4321 M-CORE trim is listed for U130 and U140 series valves, and Moen’s parts diagram for the UT8350 3-Series trim lists the escutcheon kit as its own part. Match the valve series before ordering a replacement.
