What Does NPT Mean in Plumbing?

The name is old and a little confusing. The thread is “National Pipe Thread,” but because it is tapered, many suppliers label it “National Pipe Taper.” Both point to the same B1.20.1 thread you find on water heaters, gas valves, hose bibs, gauges, and brass or steel fittings sold in the US market.
The taper is the whole point. Straight threads hold two parts together but leave a clear leak path down the grooves. NPT threads shrink in diameter as they go, so the flanks squeeze against each other and choke that path down as you drive the joint home.
How do you seal an NPT thread joint?
NPT threads taper about 3/4 inch per foot (a 1.7899-degree angle per side), so the flanks jam together as you tighten. That metal-to-metal wedge is not perfectly leak-tight on its own, so you add PTFE tape or pipe dope to fill the spiral gap. Hand-tight plus one to two wrench turns usually seals a joint.
- Wipe the male threads clean and check they are not cracked, gouged, or cross-threaded.
- Start PTFE tape one or two threads back from the end and wrap clockwise, the direction the fitting turns as you thread it on.
- Use 2 to 3 wraps for 1/2 to 3/4 inch NPT, pulling the tape tight so it seats into the threads instead of bunching.
- For pipe dope (thread sealant), brush a thin, even coat over the male threads instead of tape, or over the tape on large fittings.
- Thread the fitting on by hand until snug, then turn it 1 to 2 more turns with a wrench.
- Stop there. The taper keeps wedging, and overtightening can split a female fitting, especially plastic.

NPT vs NPS vs BSP: what is the difference?
NPT is tapered and seals by wedging; NPS (National Pipe Straight) has parallel threads that need an O-ring or gasket; BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the British equivalent with a 55-degree profile instead of 60. They look similar but do not reliably interchange, and mixing them is a common cause of slow leaks.

The practical takeaway: NPT and NPTF share a 60-degree angle and can mate, though a matched pair seals best. NPT and NPS can thread together but will not seal, since NPS relies on a separate gasket. What do MPT, FPT, MNPT, and FNPT mean?
These letters just tell you which side of the connection you have. MPT (or MNPT) is male pipe thread, the outside threads on a pipe end or nipple. FPT (or FNPT) is female pipe thread, the inside threads a male end screws into. All four are the same NPT thread, so a male NPT fitting mates with a female NPT fitting.
You will see these on product listings and catalogs: a valve might read “1/2 in FPT inlet, 3/4 in MPT outlet,” which tells you exactly what threads onto what. When both sides say NPT (or the N is implied), you are dealing with the same tapered standard, just male and female halves of it.

Why is 1/2 inch NPT not actually 1/2 inch?
Because NPT sizes are nominal, a leftover from 1800s wrought-iron pipe named for its inside bore, not the thread you measure. A 1/2 inch NPT male thread measures about 0.840 inch across, not 0.500. When mills thinned the walls, the outside stayed fixed so old dies still fit, and the name never changed.
So if you put calipers across a set of male threads to identify a fitting, do not expect the nominal number. Measure the outside diameter and match it to the chart below, then confirm the threads per inch (TPI) with a thread gauge. The nominal size is a label for compatibility, not a caliper reading.

Where is NPT used, and where should you avoid it?
NPT shows up wherever threaded metal pipe connects: water heaters, gas lines, hose bibs, valves, gauges, and brass or steel fittings. Avoid it where the pipe is not threaded metal. PEX, copper, and PVC runs use crimp rings, solder, or solvent weld instead, and forcing NPT onto the wrong material cracks fittings or leaks.
In a typical home, NPT lives at the connection points: the threaded ports on a water heater, a gas shutoff, a boiler drain, a pressure gauge, or a threaded adapter where one system meets another. The long straight runs between those points are usually a different material joined a different way.
