Trenchless Sewer Repair: CIPP Lining vs Pipe Bursting

Trenchless sewer repair fixes or replaces a damaged sewer line through one or two small access points instead of a long open trench. Two methods do almost all the work: cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, which cures a resin liner inside your existing pipe, and pipe bursting, which fractures the old pipe and pulls a new one into its place. Which one fits depends on the pipe’s condition, path, and diameter.

How trenchless sewer repair works

Trenchless repair uses access pits at each end of the damaged run and a camera inspection to map the line first. From there, a crew either lines the old pipe or bursts it and pulls a new one through, with a 50-year design life and little to no digging. Both methods start the same way: the line is cleaned and cleared, then inspected with a camera so the crew knows whether the host pipe is intact, offset, collapsed, or holding a belly. That single inspection usually decides which method is even possible.

Method 1: Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining

CIPP lining installs a felt or fiberglass liner saturated with epoxy resin inside your existing sewer pipe, then cures it hard to form a jointless “pipe within a pipe.” Nothing is dug up and nothing is removed. It suits pipes that are cracked, leaking at joints, or root-intruded but still structurally continuous. CIPP lining averages $80 to $250 per foot, per Mr. Rooter.

How CIPP lining works

The crew works from a single access point in most residential jobs, inverting or pulling a resin-soaked felt liner into the cleaned host pipe and inflating it against the wall while the resin cures. Once cured, the liner forms a hard, jointless pipe inside the old one, which seals cracks and blocks root intrusion at the joints.

  1. Clean and descale the pipe (hydro-jetting or mechanical cutting) so the liner bonds to a clean surface.
  2. Run a camera to confirm the pipe is continuous with no full collapse.
  3. Saturate the liner with epoxy resin and insert it by inversion (air or water pressure) or by winch pull-in.
  4. Inflate a bladder to press the liner tight against the host pipe.
  5. Cure with ambient time, hot water, steam, or UV light, then remove the bladder.
  6. Reinstate any branch connections with a robotic cutter and run a final camera pass.

When CIPP lining applies

Lining wins when the pipe still has an open interior and the run includes bends, because it follows turns without extra digging and needs the least surface disruption of any method. It does not work on a fully collapsed pipe, since there is no space to insert and inflate the liner, and it may not survive pre-cleaning on cast iron that has corroded to a crumble. Method 2: Pipe bursting

Pipe bursting replaces the old sewer line entirely by pulling a cone-shaped bursting head through it, fracturing the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while the head tows a new HDPE pipe in behind. Because it destroys the old pipe rather than lining it, bursting handles pipes that lining cannot: collapsed sections, severe corrosion, and lines that need to be upsized. How pipe bursting works

Bursting needs an entry pit and an exit pit at the two ends of the run, with a cable or rod threaded through the old pipe to pull the bursting head from one pit to the other.

  1. Dig two access pits, one at each end of the damaged run.
  2. Feed a cable or pulling rod through the existing pipe between the pits.
  3. Attach the bursting head, sized to the pipe, with the new HDPE pipe fused and connected behind it.
  4. Winch the head through, fracturing the old pipe outward and displacing the fragments into the soil.
  5. Pull the new HDPE pipe fully into position as the head advances.
  6. Tie in at both pits, then camera-verify the finished line.

When pipe bursting applies

Bursting is the answer for a pipe that is collapsed, offset, or so corroded that lining would fail, and it is the only trenchless method that can increase pipe diameter. A crew can burst an undersized 4-inch line and pull 6-inch HDPE through the same path. The tradeoffs: it needs straight or near-straight runs, and the outward fracturing is riskier near utilities packed close to the sewer.

The three approaches trade off cost, disruption, and which pipe conditions they can handle. Lining is least invasive but needs an intact host pipe; bursting replaces the pipe outright but needs straight runs and two pits; open-cut digging handles anything but tears up the surface. When trenchless is not an option

Trenchless is not universal, and a good contractor will tell you when to dig. The camera inspection is what settles it, and a few conditions push a job toward open-cut excavation even when you would rather avoid the trench.

When only part of the run has these problems, crews often mix methods: spot-dig the bad section and line or burst the rest.

Cost vs traditional open-cut

Trenchless is often cheaper than open-cut once surface restoration is counted, though not always. The pipe work itself can cost more per foot, but you avoid tearing out and rebuilding driveways, patios, and landscaping.
