Pull Down Faucet Not Retracting: 5 Causes and Fixes
A pull down faucet not retracting usually has a hose weight that is blocked, slipped or clamped in the wrong spot. Clear Moen’s 8 by 8 inch zone around the loop, reset the weight to your install sheet, then check the hose and the dock.
Open the sink cabinet and find the U of hose hanging below the faucet. That loop and the lump of metal clamped to it do all the retracting. Kohler sheet 1384293 says the weight acts “as a pull stop” and prevents “kinking damage”, so it sets how far the head comes out as well as what pulls it home.
How does a weight on a hose pull the head back up?
Gravity does the pulling: as you draw the head down, the weight climbs toward the faucet shank, and when you let go it drops and drags the hose back through the spout. Two limits follow from that geometry. If the weight lands on a bottle or a pipe before the head is home, return stops there. If the weight reaches the underside of the faucet, the hose stops paying out no matter how much is left.
The last stretch is not the weight’s job on a magnetic faucet. Delta form 73046 Rev. C says the sprayer “will lock into position when brought into proximity of the spout magnet”, so your hand guides it the final distance. A head that needs that nudge matches Delta’s description. A head that stops halfway does not.
Which of the 5 causes matches what your faucet head does?
The symptom narrows it to one cause in most cases, and the first 2 rows need no tools. Times are our estimates from the step counts in the sheets, except the 10 minutes Kohler quotes for its own kit and counterweight job.
| What the head does | Cause | Fix | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sticks only when the cabinet is full | 1. Stored items in the weight’s path | Empty the 8 x 8 in zone, keep it empty | 2 min |
| Stops halfway, moves again if you jiggle the hose | 1. Loop catching on the trap, disposal or a shutoff | Raise the weight per Moen, or fit hose guide 159060 | 5 to 15 min |
| Dangles below the spout, hose feels slack | 2. Weight missing, or sitting so low it rests on the floor | Refit it at your sheet’s position | 10 min |
| Docks fine, then droops after a week | 2. Clamp creeping down the hose, or 5. worn dock | Mark the weight’s spot with tape; if it moves, retighten, if not, go to the dock table | 10 min |
| Drags the whole way, and flow dropped too | 3. Hose kinked, twisted or taut | Unwind it from the supply hoses; replace if the kink stays | 10 min |
| Scrapes or catches at one point in the spout | 4. Bulged or frayed hose | Replace the hose | 30 to 45 min |
| Reaches the spout but will not lock | 5. Head rotated off the magnet, or worn retainer | Turn the head to line up, then fit the wand kit | 1 to 10 min |

How far from the loop does Delta, Moen or Kohler put the weight?
No single distance exists: the sheets below run from 2 inches above the loop bottom to 14 inches below the valve connection, measured from different starting points. Another brand’s number can put your weight in the wrong place.
| Install sheet | Faucets named | Weight position, as written | How it holds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta 44954 Rev. A | 978 and 978-SD series | Minimum of 14 in (356 mm) below the connection to the valve | Zinc weights and screws, RP11723 |
| Delta 73046 Rev. C | 978-DST and 955-DST families, among others | No distance given: slide it over the hose end before joining the hoses; the drawing shows it in the loop | Steel weight assembly, RP49149 |
| Moen INS15379, INS2049F, INS10105C | Standard pulldowns; INS2049F lists 7565 and 7594, among others | At the locator mark, just above the start of the loop curve, same side as the mark | Clamp, pliers help |
| Moen INS10676B, INS10444B | Spring pulldowns; INS10444B is the 5923 series | In the bottom of the loop curve | Clamp, pliers help |
| Kohler 1281441 | K-R78035 electronic | About 11 in (279 mm) from the bottom of the hose loop | 2 screws |
| Kohler 1562954-2-C | Touchless | 2 to 3 in (51 to 76 mm) above the loop bottom, per the drawing | Squeeze clasp |
| Kohler 1384293-2-D | Touchless | 2 to 3 in (51 to 76 mm) from the cabinet floor | Cable tie just below the weight |
Three things follow for your repair. The generation matters: Delta’s 978 family went from a screwed zinc weight with a 14 inch minimum to a sliding steel weight with no stated distance on the 978-DST. Web figures of 6 inches above the loop or 15 inches below the counter appear on none of the 14 sheets we read, so treat them as guesses. And a Delta 73046 weight has no clamp to reset: if it will not drop, the hose or an obstruction is holding it.
To reset a clamped weight, work in this order with the head docked:
- Clear the cabinet and note where the weight sits now, with tape on the hose.
- Release it: 2 screws on the K-R78035, the clasp on Kohler 1562954, pliers on a Moen clamp, snips on the 1384293 cable tie.
- Move it to your sheet’s position. On a Moen standard pulldown, look for the printed locator mark on the hose.
- Reclamp it firmly. A clamp that creeps causes the droop in row 4.
- Do what Kohler’s sheets say: extend and retract the hose to check for smooth operation, then adjust as necessary.
Lost the sheet? Moen hosts them at assets.moen.com under the INS number, and 1-800-289-6636 will look one up by model number. Moen lists replacement hose weight 125989 at $26.05.
What snags the loop, and when is Moen’s $24.44 hose guide worth buying?
Anything inside the weight’s travel can stop it, and Moen’s answer is an 8 x 8 in clear area kept “free of any moveable items”, naming bottles and cleaning supplies.
Fixed plumbing needs a different move. For pipes that cannot shift, INS2049F says to “consider repositioning the weight higher on the hose”, which lifts the travel path clear at the cost of some reach. Where that is not enough, Moen hose guide 159060 ($24.44 on moen.com when we read it) is sold “to isolate the hose from plumbing lines and other items under the kitchen sink”. A loop that rubs on a trap or disposal on every pull is the case for buying it.
Two more checks. On a touchless faucet, Kohler K-R78035 and 1562954 both warn that the weight must not interfere with the valve box or wire connections, so look up at the box before blaming the hose. And if the supply hoses were coiled to take up slack, Kohler’s troubleshooting table wants a 3 in (76 mm) inside diameter: a tighter coil can kink them, and any coil hanging in the loop’s path is a snag.

When should you replace the hose instead of moving the weight?
Replace it when a kink will not relax, the braid is broken, or the hose catches at the same point every pull, since no weight position fixes a hose that cannot slide. Kohler’s sheets state the requirement: supply hoses and pull-down hose “must not be taut, kinked, or twisted”. First unwind any twist around the supply hoses, because that fix costs nothing.
Swelling is the case no maker sheet addresses, and we found no published test. With the water off and the head removed, draw the hose to full length and run it through your fingers. A bulge, flat spot or broken braid that lines up with where it catches at the spout tip is your answer. Braided hoses, such as the ProMotion hose on Kohler’s K-596, show fray on the surface.
Delta publishes the numbers: form 73046 lists RP50390 (54 in hose assembly and clip) and RP62057 (62 in), and form 44954 lists RP44647 for the older 978. Match the length you remove. The Moen and Kohler documents we read give no hose part number, so ask Moen with your model number, or use Kohler’s date-label check described in the next section. On Delta, feed the new hose through the spout tip only, slide the weight on, join and clip the hoses, then “pull down moderately” to test. Moen’s quick connect must click, followed by a tug downward. With the head off, Delta says to flush the lines for 1 minute before refitting it.
Afterward, dry the joint and watch it for a day. A clip or quick connect that never seated drips onto the cabinet floor, and our guide to tracing water under a kitchen sink separates that from a drain leak. Two look-alikes are not hose faults at all. A drip from the spout with the handle shut points to the valve (RP50587 on those Delta parts pages), covered in our kitchen faucet cartridge replacement walkthrough.
The other is the wand O-ring, which gets blamed for retraction trouble it cannot cause. Moen INS10105C puts the O-ring and screen where the hose threads into the wand, and treats them as a flow step: unscrew, rinse the screen, reinstall, re-check flow. If flow is what dropped, start with our low water pressure in a kitchen faucet checks.
Why won’t the head lock on MagnaTite, Reflex or DockNetik?
If the head reaches the spout and falls back out, the hose has done its job and the fault is in the dock, which each maker handles differently.
| Dock | What the maker documents | Failure to look for | Part or next move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta MagnaTite | Delta product copy: an integrated magnet pulls the wand into place. Form 73046: twisting the head 90 degrees either way makes the magnets repel | Head rotated off line, so the magnets push apart. On form 44954, the diverter can “loosen docking” if turned counterclockwise while nested | On form 73046 models: RP80977 wand retainer and replacement kit, then RP54537 spout assembly with magnet (specify finish) as the last resort |
| Moen Reflex | Moen Reflex page: “retracting effortlessly and securely docking”. The page and the 9 Moen sheets we read never call the dock magnetic | Moen documents no dock fault, so run the weight and snag checks first | No dock kit on the pages we read. Call 1-800-289-6636 with the model number, such as 7565 or 7864, and ask for the wand and hose for it |
| Kohler DockNetik | K-596 spec sheet: a magnetic system inside the spout “securely locks the sprayhead” | Sprayhead feels loose in the spout, the complaint on Kohler Assist | Kohler video: wand retention kit 1051455 plus a counterweight adjustment, about 10 minutes. Check your date label first, at 0:45 in the video |
Try the free test before ordering anything: hold the head near the spout and rotate it slowly through a quarter turn. If it snaps in at one angle, Delta’s 90 degree behavior explains your problem, and the fix is alignment. If the head is cracked or its buttons have failed, that is a separate job, and our page on replacing a kitchen sink sprayer covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pull down faucet work without the hose weight?
Not properly. Moen sheet INS10205 notes the weight must be installed for ease of function, and Kohler sheet 1384293 says it acts as a pull stop and prevents kinking damage. If yours is gone, order the maker’s part, such as Moen 125989, rather than improvising with a clamp.
Why does my pull down hose stop short when I pull it out?
The weight has probably reached the underside of the faucet or hit a pipe. Kohler calls the weight a pull stop, so its position sets your reach. Slide it lower on the hose to gain reach, staying inside your sheet’s position, then extend and retract the hose to test it.
Can I add a second weight to make the hose retract faster?
Kohler’s support page does describe adding a counterweight on specific faucets, in its video with kit 1051455. None of the 14 Delta, Moen and Kohler install sheets we read calls for stacking 2 weights, so check for a snag or a slipped clamp first and ask the maker before adding mass.
Do spring pull down faucets have a hose weight too?
Moen’s do. Sheets INS10676B and INS10444B for its spring pulldown models still list a hose weight, placed in the bottom of the loop curve, and they ask for the same 8 by 8 inch clear area. The exposed spring guides the hose above the deck and does not replace the weight below it.
How we sourced this
We read 14 install sheets (Delta 44954 and 73046; Moen INS2049F, INS15379, INS801M, INS10676B, INS10917, INS10444B, INS10105C, INS10200 and INS10205; Kohler 1281441, 1562954 and 1384293) plus Moen and Kohler product and support pages and Kohler’s video description. Nothing was tested. Time estimates are ours, except Kohler’s 10 minutes. We could not open Kohler’s K-596 install sheet or the video transcript, or find Moen and Kohler hose part numbers, so those are left out. Delta’s 73046 copy is hosted by a retailer.
