The short answer

There were 178,663 plumbing and HVAC businesses with no employees in the US in 2023, according to Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics, up 12.8 percent from 158,446 in 2018. They outnumber employer establishments (111,207) and make up 62 percent of all businesses in the trade, but averaged $78,389 in receipts each. Texas has the most, 26,039.

What the table shows

Almost every federal statistic about plumbers leaves out the self-employed. BLS employment counts, the Economic Census and payroll data all cover businesses with employees. The Census Bureau’s Nonemployer Statistics fills the gap: it counts every business that files a tax return in the industry but has no paid employees, which in plumbing means the owner-operator with a van. The data are published for NAICS 23822 (plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors) by state.

What we calculated

Most plumbing businesses have no employees, but they earn little of the money

Formula. Nonemployer count and receipts against employer establishments and revenue.

Calculation. 178,663 solo businesses against 111,207 employer establishments: 62 percent of businesses. Solo receipts in 2022 were $13.5 billion against $297.6 billion for employer firms in the 2022 Economic Census: about 4.3 percent of combined revenue.

Finding. By count, the trade is mostly one-person businesses. By revenue it is overwhelmingly employer firms. Both statements are true and are often confused.

Limitations. Nonemployer counts include part-time and side businesses; some are owners who also hold a payroll job. Receipts are gross business receipts, not income.

The solo trade grew 13 percent in five years

Formula. Change in nonemployer count, 2018 to 2023.

Calculation. 158,446 to 178,663.

Finding. Self-employment in plumbing and HVAC kept growing through a tight labour market, consistent with tradespeople going independent.

Limitations. Nonemployer counts are derived from tax filings and can rise when people start filing for side work.

How this report was built

Methodology

Sources. Census Bureau Nonemployer Statistics state files for 2023, 2022 and 2018 (NAICS 23822, all legal forms of organization); County Business Patterns 2023 (NAICS 238220 employer establishments); 2022 state population estimates. Downloaded from www2.census.gov on 4 October 2026.

National totals. Sum of the 50 states and DC; the national nonemployer file publishes this industry only at the four-digit level.

Retrieval date. 4 October 2026.

Data limitations

  • Nonemployer Statistics covers businesses with no paid employees that file business income tax returns; it counts businesses, not people.
  • NAICS 23822 combines plumbing with HVAC.
  • Receipts are noise-protected by the Census Bureau and some state values carry quality flags.
  • Employer counts (CBP, establishments) and nonemployer counts (businesses) are different units; the solo share is indicative.
